Buying a new kitchen can be stressful with many businesses promising the world but under delivering in many ways. With our many years of experience within the industry we have simplified the entire process from start to finish. I have listed a step by step guide to buying a new kitchen including things to watch out for.
- Don’t get rushed into making a decision by high pressure sales people, your kitchen needs to be designed to suit your requirements. A caring and dedicated designer will be willing to spend the time with you.
- Do they have a kitchen showroom? It is very important to know exactly what you are getting, from material to hardware and fittings. You will also see their attention to detail and quality of finish.
- Standard or custom cabinets? Many companies use modular cabinet systems which are made to set sizes. They do not allow any modifications and simply won’t work in all cases. Custom cabinets will always look and fit better. Look for quality hinges, drawer runners and carcase materials that include solid timber rails and solid backs.
- Product warranty. It is important that a supplier backs their products by supplying a warranty on all materials and workmanship. Make sure you are advised of these periods.
- Designing your kitchen will be the most important step. It needs to function to suit your needs so detailed planning is essential. Have an idea of the appliances you will be using at this stage. 3D computerised drawings will help you visualise your dream kitchen before deciding on your final design.
- Finishes. Do your research. Doors, benchtops and splashbacks have advantages and disadvantages. What would suit you, your family and your budget?
- Trade work. One of the most important steps to be weary of. Only licenced and insured companies can include trade work in their contracts. You will notice a lot of companies separating trade works because of this reason. We would recommend trade work especially installation be included in your contract. Companies will separate trades with the kitchen supply contract in order to avoid being licenced and insured. Having a company that can completely project manage your kitchen project from start to finish will save you a lot of time and stress and will leave the kitchen company liable for all the work completed under their contract.
- Time frame. Manufacturing time can vary depending on finishes and product types you have chosen. It is important not to be swayed by companies with unrealistic timelines, it’s not something you want to rush but more important to be properly project managed.
Careful consideration should be given when deciding to purchase a new kitchen. Make sure you are comfortable with the process and the service you are getting from the beginning. We hope this article gives you guidance and an indication of what you should expect from a reputable company.
Your aim is to create a perfect kitchen which you can enjoy for many years.
